Hong Kong : Superbug blaster to take aim at hospital

Via Standard, an interesting article, lets hope their product works as how they are claiming it to be :

" Experts have concocted a super-spray, which they claim, can wipe out 99 percent of microscopic nasties that threaten our health.

And the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is so confident that its bug basher can do the job it has applied for patents in the United States, the mainland and Taiwan.

A test run will be launched at Queen Elizabeth Hospital before the end of the year.

The spray-on smart anti-microbial coating is effective for one month and could replace the current two-hourly alcohol or bleach cleaning of surfaces in public places.

Yeung King-lun, professor at the department of chemical and bimolecular engineering, said the disinfectant can inactivate 99 percent of the H1N1 human swine flu virus within three minutes, kill 99.9 percent of bacteria in one minute and 99 percent of bacillus spores within 30 minutes.

It also inhibits mold and fungal growth, and offers protection for at least 30 days.

Yeung said the disinfectant coating can sense an increase in temperature from body heat or moisture, and automatically releases a controlled amount of disinfectant to kill the microbes."
