Jamaica : Health ministry reports more than 1,000 suspected cases of dengue

Via Jamaica Observer :

" THE Ministry of Health says there were 1,137 suspected cases of dengue fever as at September 4, 149 of which have been laboratory-confirmed. The health ministry also said that there has been one confirmed death associated with dengue haemorrhagic fever, this as it steps up its mosquito control programme to contain the spread of the viral disease.

According to director of emergency, disaster management and special services at the ministry, Dr Marion Bullock DuCasse, 1,704 communities have been fogged since June.

"We expect that by the end of September an additional 1,200 communities will be fogged. This is a part of our overall Dengue Prevention and Control Plan and is a complement to a number of other activities being undertaken," she pointed out.

For the period July 25 to August 28, 2010, the team visited approximately 8,000 premises and about 3,800 were found to be positive for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the dengue fever causing virus.

Meanwhile, Dr Bullock DuCasse is urging persons to visit their health care provider, if they have symptoms of dengue fever. These include headache, pain behind the eyes, joint or bone pain, muscle pain, skin rash, and nausea. Aspirin should not be taken if these symptoms occur."
