" KUALA LUMPUR: A high dengue alert has been issued nationwide following two more deaths, taking the toll to 103 between January and August this year. There were only 68 deaths recorded last year.
The Health Ministry has also declared 265 localities nationwide as dengue outbreak sites. Of the total, 21 sites are dengue hot spot localities, with 274 cases reported. At the dengue hot spot localities here and in Johor, Sarawak, Selangor and Kelantan, the ministry has put up signboards at strategic locations alerting people to the disease.
Last week, 1,159 people were infected with the deadly disease compared with 1,074 the previous week. This brings the total number of cases to 32,688, compared with 29,700 cases in the same period last year.
Director-general of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican also directed all doctors in public and private hospitals to check patients who come in with dengue symptoms thoroughly before sending them home with medication."
