Via Mindanao Times, dengue cases and fatalities keeps on rising in the Philippines :
" THE GOVERNMENT and the Davao Medical Society will investigate the reasons behind the increase of dengue death toll as the mosquito-borne disease claimed 22 more lives in August alone.
Councilor Bernard E. Al-ag, city council’s chair of the committee on health, said in a weekly Club 888 forum at Marco Polo Davao yesterday that the surge of deaths might be attributed to improper hospital management after his office received complaints that patients were not handled well particularly at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).
“It is alarming,” Al-ag said. The death toll from January to August has now reached 63, or one short of the whole total casualties from dengue for 2009.
In response to Al-ag’s statements, Dr. Leopoldo Vega, chief of SPMC (formerly Davao Medical Center), conceded the lack of beds because the number of cases admitted to their hospital rose 250 percent.
Not all patients admitted at SPMC, however, lived in the urban area as most of them came from the the city’s fringes. The hospital has only 1,300 beds with 700 additional beds, which are placed in the hallways and other vacant areas of the medical center."
