" THE School for the Visually Impaired reopens today after it was closed for a week because of an outbreak of swine flu that infected at least 65 pupils and teachers.
At least 100 students and teachers were infected with the H1N1 flu virus at two schools in Windhoek during the past week.
A prompt response from Government and 24-hour surveillance and treatment has kept the virus in check and no further outbreaks have been reported.
Principal Marillize Fransman at the School for the Visually Impaired confirmed yesterday that all of the children and teachers are doing well and a normal school routine will resume today.
She praised the work of health officials from the Ministry of Health and Social Services, whose hands-on approach managed to halt the spread of the H1N1 virus.
A group of children at the School of the Hearing Impaired are also improving.
A senior health official at the ministry confirmed on Friday that the so-called swine flu outbreak has been “mild” and “no one was admitted to hospital”. He said the outbreak didn’t cause severe symptoms and presented symptoms that resemble the “common cold”.
Health Minister Dr Richard Kamwi last week confirmed that 970 pupils from both Oshikuku in the Omusati Region and Windhoek showed “flu-like” symptoms. The Oshikuku flu outbreak started about three weeks ago, while the first flu symptoms in Windhoek were reported one and half weeks ago."
