Via News Day :
" AN URGENT call for action is being made by residents of M2 Ring Road near Debe regarding a manmade pond on State land which they claim is a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Several residents contacted Newsday saying that within recent months, persons living near to this concrete pond, situated on land belonging to the now defunct Caroni 1975 Ltd, have had to dig deep into their pockets to pay doctors’ bills and for medication after coming down with symptoms associated with Dengue Fever.
The dengue fever, blamed for several deaths this year, is transmitted by the bite of an aedes aegypti mosquito. A resident, who asked that his name not be published, admitted that the water inside the pond appears to be clean and clear but he was unsure whether or not the water had been treated. “After all, it is stagnant water and a prime breeding spot for mosquitoes.
This pond is on State land and we are calling on the State to ensure this pond is treated with chemicals to kill whatever existing mosquito larvae there is and to also cover the pond or treat the water so that mosquitoes won’t breed in it,” the resident said."
