Malaysia : Sharp rise in number of young adults with diabetes

Via The Star :

" KUALA LUMPUR: An increasing number of young adults are suffering from diabetes, prompting the Health Ministry to now advise Malaysians who are 30 to go for diabetic screening.
A 2006 survey, the latest by the ministry, showed a sharp increase in the incidents of diabetes among Malaysians of 30 years’ old.

There was also a significant increase among the 18 to 19 age group.

“Because of the findings, we now recommend all Malaysians to go for diabetes screening if they are 30 and above, regardless of gender or whether they have other diseases,” said Dr Wan Mohamad Wan Bebakar, chairman of the ministry’s Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) task force.

Speaking at a press con-ference here, he said diabetes prevalence among adults, aged 30 to 34, was 4.9% and 15% among those aged 45 to 49, while the prevalence was 20% among those aged 50 and above."
