" Sept. 7: A bank manager from Chennai who was undergoing treatment in a private hospital here succumbed to the A(H1N1) influenza on Tuesday. This is the first recorded death attributed to swine flu since January this year in the district. Shanmugam, 50, from Coimbatore was working in Chennai as a bank manager.
He had come to the hospital for a check-up as he had undergone a renal transplant a few years ago. He was also a diabetic.
Since he was having difficulty in breathing, Shanmugam was admitted to the hospital. Doctors suspected swine flu when his condition worsened and sent his swab samples for tests. The results, which arrived on Monday night, confirmed that Shanmugam had swine flu.
Shanmugam was then shifted to the Intensive Medical Care Unit at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) at around 11.30 pm but he died without responding to treatment at 12.15 am on Tuesday, said a doctor. Till date four patients have died of swine flu at the CMCH."
