Via IBN Live :
" KOCHI: The unnatural death of an elephant, suspected of Anthrax, at the Periyar Tiger Reserve a couple of days ago has raised fears of an epidemic outbreak.
With Forest Veterinary officials suspecting symptoms of Anthrax in the animal, samples have been sent for detailed tests. A final confirmation will be made only after the results of the tests are out.
It was last week that a female elephant was found dead at Vallakkadavu range, opposite to Nellikkampetti in the Thekkady range. The forest officials reached the spot and carried out a detailed examina-tion. Since Anthrax was suspected, its body was burnt without carrying out a postmortem examination.
“Samples were sent to the laboratory at Palode. In a couple of days the results will be out. Since the elephant is suspected to have died of Anthrax, the body was not cut open,” said veterinary officials.
Forest officials said that generally the Anthrax virus will be alive for over 30 years."

US : Fla. man survives anthrax infection
Via UPI :
" Health authorities in Minnesota say a 61-year-old St. Petersburg, Fla., man has survived an infection by a rare and lethal strain of anthrax.
Doctors said Dan Anders apparently inhaled spores of a naturally occurring strain of anthrax during a summer vacation as he and his wife headed from Florida to North Dakota to visit Mount Rushmore, the St. Petersburg Times reported.
Reaching a friend's home in Minnesota, Anders was feeling run down and was taken to a local hospital.
Blood tests revealed Bacillus anthracis, the anthrax bacteria.
On Aug. 5 Anders, already delirious at that point, was taken to a Minneapolis hospital for emergency treatment, where he was put in a medically induced coma and spent 11 days on life support."

Anthrax in Serbia - situation in infected zones under control
Via EM Portal :
" The situation in two villages in Vojvodina that have been declared anthrax-infected zones is under control and there is minimum possibility for the spread of the disease, Maja Andrijasevic of the Ministry of Agriculture Veterinary Directorate said Friday.
“Citizens can feel absolutely positive that everything they eat and drink is safe,” Andrijasevic said in connection with the current situation in the villages of Bocar and Novo Milosevo that have been declared anthrax-infected zones.
Andrijasevic said that from the moment the disease had been diagnosed, the relevant veterinary service, veterinary institute and the competent veterinary inspection were out there in the field and implementing prescribed measures.
The implementation of control measures is still under way, she added.
The disease is usually related to veterinarians, as they are more likely to get into contact with an infected animal, while the rest of the population is safe and there is minimum possibility for the spread of the disease, Andrijasevic said for the Radio and Television of Serbia (RTS)."
