" ANOTHER person has died of typhoid in Mufulira’s Mupambe township.
This brings to three the number of people who have died since the waterborne disease broke out in December last year.
Ministry of Health spokesperson Reuben Mbewe confirmed this in an interview on Tuesday.
Dr Mbewe said the man, whose identity he withheld, died at Malcolm Watson Hospital over the weekend.
“We recorded one death over the weekend. One patient died of typhoid in the male ward over the weekend. This is the third death we have recorded since the outbreak of the disease last year,” Dr Mbewe said."

US : Brain-eating amoeba claims fourth victim who picked up parasite after swimming in lake

" A Kansas resident died this week from what was likely a rare infection by a brain-eating amoeba - the fourth such case in the U.S. this year.
State and local officials warned residents to avoid activities in warm rivers, lakes and other bodies of heated, fresh water, including ponds near power plants.
Single deaths from such infections also have been reported this summer in Florida, Louisiana and Virginia.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 120 cases - nearly all fatal - have been reported since the early 1960s.
The Kansas victim was from Sedgwick County. The person apparently went swimming in August in the city lake in Winfield, about 30 miles southeast of Wichita, said county spokeswoman Amanda Matthews.
The victim entered a hospital Aug. 19 complaining of headaches, developed breathing problems and died five days later."

UK : Holidaymakers warned after six struck by malaria in Greece

" Holidaymakers travelling to Greece have been warned to protect against mosquito bites after six people were struck by malaria.
The cases - five Greek adults and a Roma child - have all been reported since June this year and were seen in people who had no history of travel to a country where malaria is common, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
There have been no deaths and all six patients are recovering, an agency spokeswoman added.
The cases were identified in the districts of Laconia, in the south of the Peloponnese peninsula, and the island of Euboea, east of the Greek mainland - areas of marshy wetland where mosquitoes are common.
The Greek authorities have stepped up malaria surveillance in these areas, intensifying local mosquito control programmes and raising awareness among doctors and the general public.
Health officials warned that holidaymakers should take precautions to avoid being bitten."

UK : Swine flu - 200 fight for life as number of patients in intensive care doubles in a week

The number of patients in intensive care has doubled in a week and many of them are either elderly or pregnant.
Seventeen of the 190 are being kept alive by highly-specialised heart and lung machines – three times the usual number.
Pregnant mother-of-four Fallon Devaney, 25, is in a critical condition in hospital after contracting the disease last week.
Doctors fear that the baby is sapping Ms Devaney's strength - leaving her unable to fight the infection.
It is feared that the swine flu strain may have grown more virulent over the past 12 months with victims quickly becoming dangerously ill."

Fourteen of the deaths are linked to H1N1 swine flu – the strain which swept the country in last year’s pandemic.
Another child, a girl of nine, was fighting for her life in hospital.
A high proportion of victims are aged under 65, including six aged under 18, because swine flu is more likely to affect younger people.
At least 17 of the worst affected patients whose lungs have given out, including four pregnant women, were last night being treated on extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation machines.
A further four or five critically ill patients are waiting for spaces on the machines – which use an artificial lung to oxygenate the blood outside the body – to become available.
Nine-year-old Chantelle McAdam, meanwhile, was on a life support machine after being was admitted to Manchester Royal Infirmary with breathing difficulties."
