" After flatly denying any existence of NDM-1 superbug and dubbing the British study on it as 'unscientific', the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has finally woken up and decided to initiate research studies on NDM-1 and antibiotic resistance in the country.
The research body has invited scientists to submit their research proposals in this respect. The body has admitted that it is extremely essential to generate scientific evidence on the prevailing trends of antimicrobial resistance in all parts of the country and at all levels of health care, comprising primary, secondary and tertiary systems.
"On individual basis, researchers have been reporting the presence of multidrug resistant organisms and their anti-microbial susceptibility patterns, but there is lack of a consolidated effort to bring about change," ICMR says.
The plan is to carry out studies at the level of genes to find out how genes which make a bug resistant to drugs are transferred among various bugs within the human body. The research will also be carried out to study genes of microbes to know the areas which could be targeted by drugs to kill it. This would also help in development of better diagnostics."

India : Dengue cases 1,500 plus; MCD ultimatum to striking DBCs

" Dengue cases crossed 1,500 in Delhi on Wednesday where the worried civic authorities issued an ultimatum to the striking mosquito breeding checkers to return to work by Thursday evening or face sacking.
"If the domestic breeding checkers do not return to work by 5 pm tomorrow, we will sack them and appoint new ones in their place," MCD Public Health Committee Chairman V K Monga said.
Officials, however, admit that that appointing new people may also lead to a temporary manpower crunch as the process may take at least four to five days. The strike by at least half of MCD's breeding checkers demanding regularisation of their contract jobs entered the fourth day on Wednesday.
The striking workers staged a dharna and raised slogans near the MCD headquarters at Town Hall on Wednesday.
Anti-Malaria Karamchari Sangh president Ashok Chaudhary said the DBCs will continue their agitation. Officials said the workers want the MCD to assure in writing about their regularisation."

India : Cholera woes after dengue and eye flu

" Cholera has joined the list of diseases the city is battling this season. More than 500 cases of Cholera have been reported so far, with North Delhi being the worst affected, according to Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) authorities.
More than 200 cases were reported in August alone, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) authorities said.
"Cases have been reported from Civil Lines, Burari, Sant Nagar, Uttaranchal Enclave, Lal Bagh, Majnu ka Tila and Mukandpur. Rohini witnessed the maximum number of cases in August. The cases reported are from the MCD's Infectious Diseases Hospital. The actual number may be higher," Dr K. K. Chaudhary, MCD's deputy municipal health officer (epidemiology), said."
