Swine Flu Claims First Victim in Romania

" Swine flu claimed its first victim in Romania for this year, the local authorities have announced.
A 60-year-old man died Sunday night in the hospital in the city of Iasi, about 320 km north-east of Bucharest.

The man had recently returned from Egypt and he started developing the symptoms shortly after that.

At present, there are two confirmed cases of people infected with the A(H1N1) virus in Romania. Last year, 122 people died from the virus in the country."

Romania registers first H1N1 infection this season

" Bucharest : Romania has registered a first case of infection with the A/H1N1 virus this season in a three-year-old in Calarasi, southeast Romania, authorities said Thursday, Romanian Mediafax news agency. This first case of the season in Romania is the 40th in Europe, Geza Molnar, adviser to the health minister, told a news conference Thursday.

He added the child is doing well and did not require hospitalization. Romania registered 6,999 cases of infection with the H1N1 virus and 122 deaths during a swine flu pandemic."

Romania : Four Dead From West Nile Virus

" Four people have died in Romania from infections with the mosquito-borne West Nile virus, the Health Ministry said Wednesday, adding four new infections have been confirmed, bringing the total number to 38.

A 60-year-old woman, from the southeastern Constanta county, who also had hypertension and had suffered a stroke, is the fourth person to die in Romania from infection with the West Nile virus.

All four people who died were aged over 60 and had chronic illnesses.

West Nile virus infections have affected the whole of Europe this summer. The virus is transmitted in humans through mosquito-bites and is not transmitted directly between humans.

There is no vaccine against the virus."
