" A typhoid outbreak that began in Harare last year is steadily spreading across Zimbabwe with more than 3 000 cases reported although only one death due to the disease has been reported so far, health officials have said.
New infections have in recent months been recorded in districts lying several hundreds of kilometres away from the capital, highlighting the risk that the typhoid outbreak could turn into a crisis of similar proportions to a cholera epidemic that wrecked havoc across Zimbabwe from 2008 to 2009.
Ministry of health director of epidemiology and disease control Portia Manangazira told the parliamentary portfolio committee on health and child welfare that the ministry did not have the capacity including adequate medicines to combat a major outbreak of typhoid."

Zimbabwe : Harare typhoid cases continue to rise

" Cases of typhoid are continuing to rise in Harare, where at least 90 people have been hospitalised and more than a thousand are suspected to have contracted the disease.
Residents in and around the capital have been on high alert since the first typhoid cases were confirmed last year. But in recent months, the combination of extreme heat, summer rains and dilapidated basic municipal services, has resulted in perfect conditions for the disease to spread
"We have attended to over 600 cases in Kuwadzana alone," city health director Prosper Chonzi was quoted as saying in the state media this week. The MDC-T meanwhile said on Wednesday that more than one thousand Harare residents had been treated this month.
The bacterial disease, which spreads most easily in areas without proper sanitation, causes vomiting, fever and diarrhoea and the public have been urged to use good hygiene to prevent the situation from worsening.
The city and surrounding areas have been struck by severe water shortages since last year, with some areas not being supplied with clean water for many weeks. The shortages have sometimes resulted in residents fighting each other while trying to access water from the limited number of boreholes across the city."

Zimbabwe : Cholera strikes diamond fields

" HARARE : More than 78 people have been admitted to hospitals in Mutare following an outbreak of the highly contagious cholera epidemic in the militarized Marange diamonds fields.
According to the Deputy Minister of Local Government Sesel Zvidzai the Government of Zimbabwe has received reports of the outbreak that has affected mostly children for the past three days.
"We have received information of an outbreak of cholera in Marange and we aretaking measures to curb the disease along with the Ministry of Health. The disease outbreak started two days ago and at least 78 people have been taken to hospital, mostly Mutare General Hospital," said Zvidzai.
According to the minister, the biggest challenge that the government is faced with is that the area where the disease outbreak was reported is highly sensitive and difficult for Non Govermental Organisations to penetrate."
The biggest challenge in the area is the presence of the army, and we willtherefore put up camps outside the security area so that people can accesshealth facilities quickly in order to curb the spread of the disease," saidZvidzai."
