" NEW flights to Bali may pave the way for Townsville residents to explore South-East Asia but it has also opened up the region to visitors of a different kind.
Two people have recently returned home from Bali after contracting the potentially deadly dengue fever virus while on holidays.
The news has sparked concern from the Townsville City Council and Queensland Health over the possibility of foreign strains of dengue fever and even other tropical diseases or parasites being brought into the region.
Both organisations have planned discussions with new international carrier Strategic Airlines on how to combat the problem and protect the region from outbreaks.
Australian health authorities issued an alert after 11 cases of Legionnaires' disease were detected in Victorian and Western Australian residents returning from holidays in the Kuta area of Bali between August 2010 and January 2011."

Australia : Dengue outbreak

" A DENGUE outbreak has reached more than two dozen cases, with health authorities worried recent rainfall and hot weather will increase the spread of the potentially deadly virus.
There have been 26 cases of dengue type two, mainly recorded in the suburbs of Hermit Park and Mundingburra, with eight new cases confirmed in the last week.
The outbreak began in June, while three unrelated cases of dengue were also confirmed in Railway Estate in October.
The viral disease is spread between people by infected aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
Queensland Health Public Health Medical Officer Dr Steven Donohue said residents leaving the city for the Christmas break needed to clean up their yards first.
He urged holidaymakers to remove any empty containers that could be filled by rain and become stagnant when unattended the perfect breeding site for the mosquitoes."

" HEALTH authorities waging a war against dengue fever have been left disappointed after another case was confirmed in Mundingburra yesterday.
The latest case of the mosquito-borne virus has again sparked calls for residents to rid their backyards of potential breeding sites, amid fears of a widespread outbreak as wet weather continues to soak the region.
The locally acquired case was believed to be linked to a series of type two cases earlier this year in Hermit Park, with the man affected recovering at home.
Townsville City Council and Queensland Health teams quickly moved into the area yesterday, doorknocking and carrying out inspections in the neighbourhood.
Tropical Regional Services' Public Health medical officer Dr Steven Donohue said final testing was still being undertaken to determine whether the latest case was also type two, linking it with the Hermit Park outbreak."

" TOWNSVILLE could be facing a widespread outbreak of dengue fever this wet season, health experts warn.
Residents have been warned to take responsibility for their own backyards and ensure they are not harbouring breeding sites for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which carries the disease.
The Queensland Health warning follows the confirmation of three locally-acquired cases in the same household in Railway Estate yesterday, with fears recent rainfall and the fast-approaching wet season could see more residents contract the virus.
The latest type 2 cases are believed to be a continuation of an outbreak which started in Hermit Park in June which resulted in 10 type 2 cases diagnosed, the most recent just last month."
