A few days later, an H1N1 out-break unfolds as more than 70 people fall ill during the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, the largest annual mass gathering in the world.
It sounds like a scene out of the Hollywood film Contagion. According to Dr. Kamran Khan, an infectious-disease physician and scientist at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, it has happened before and it could happen again.
Major disease outbreaks are a very real risk when masses of people gather in one place, he said, such as at the upcoming London Olympics this summer.
To help better prepare, a team of Canadian researchers is working with British authorities to track and anticipate the risk for an infectious disease outbreak during the event.
The international collaboration, marking the first time experts from around the world are combining technologies for global disease surveillance, is documented in a research paper published today in the scientific journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases."

Canada : Hundreds may have been exposed to measles in Edmonton

EDMONTON : Up to 1,000 people may have been exposed to measles in downtown Edmonton and at University Hospital, Alberta Health Services said Tuesday.
Only people who have not been vaccinated or have not had the contagious disease should be concerned that they were exposed to the person who had measles.
“We’re particularly asking those people ... to watch very carefully for symptoms. And if symptoms develop, to stay home, stay away from people as much as possible and to call Health Link,” said Dr. Marcia Johnson, medical officer of health for the Edmonton zone."

Canada : Doctors failing to spot severe superbug infections in children: Survey

" Children in Canada are being hospitalized with serious drug-resistant superbug infections that doctors may not be suspecting in many cases, a nationwide survey suggests.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections in children are occurring in most parts of the country, according to a new study from the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program, which collects data from more than 2,500 pediatricians and other specialists monthly to monitor rare diseases and conditions in Canadian children.
MRSA — a bacterium that is immune to a host of penicillin-type antibiotics — can cause infections of the skin and soft tissues beneath the skin, aggressive bone infections and severe pneumonia."
