Vietnam : Bird flu outbreak detected in Ha Nam
Via Vietnam News :
" The People's Committee of northern Ha Nam province yesterday announced the first outbreak of bird flu in Nhat Tan Commune, Kim Bang District, while many other localities reported high risk of the disease.
More than 2,500 poultry, including young ducks and muscovy ducks, raised by two local households in Ha Nam, died on Tuesday.
Later test on four samples of the deceased poultry confirmed they were positive for the bird flu virus or H5N1, according to the provincial animal health department.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's Department of Animal Health sterilised the affected areas, set up five quarantine stations in the commune and culled all poultry raised by the affected households.
However, according to a Vietnam News Agency correspondent, some local residents threw dead poultry into canals, and many of duck carcuses were decomposing in the open air."

Vietnam : Bird flu outbreak threatens
Via Vietnam News :
" The Department of Animal Health has warned that there is a high risk of a large-scale outbreak of bird flu without drastic preventive measures in the near future.
Bird flu has been reported in four communes in three provinces of Quang Tri, Thanh Hoa and Soc Trang over the past month, affecting nearly 1,700 poultry and forcing the killing of more than 4,000 domestic fowls, said the department's deputy head Pham Van Dong at a meeting of the Steering Committee for Bird Flu Prevention and Control yesterday.
A number of poultry suspected of catching the disease have started to appear in other localities such as Nghe An, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang, Ha Noi and Thai Nguyen.
Bird flu has so far killed two people this year in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta's Soc Trang and Kien Giang Provinces.
The Health Ministry warned of a possible large-scale outbreak of bird flu if the three affected provinces could not keep the disease under control while unfavourable weather conditions, transport and slaughtering of poultry posed a high risk."

Vietnam : HCM City to crack down on diseases
Via Vietnam News, excerpt :
" The HCM City Department of Health will continue to take measures against the spread of diseases like dengue fever, hand-foot-mouth disease, flu, chicken pox and rubella in the first months of this year.
The department's Medicine Centre has been tasked with guiding health centres at district level in carrying out more effective prevention work.
At a workshop yesterday, Dr Nguyen Dac Tho, deputy director of the centre, asked participants to focus on kindergartens and schools in order to prevent the HFMD from spreading again at the beginning of this year.
If the prevention work were carried out well in kindergartens and schools, the number of patients contracting the disease would reduce, he said.
The hand-foot and mouth disease spread for a prolonged period last year, with 12,657 people contracting the disease, 30 of whom died. This compared to just 3,621 HFMD patients and one fatality in 2010, he added.
While the number of HFMD patients has reduced of late, it was still higher than the average of the previous four years."

Vietnam : More kids hospitalised due to viral disease
Via Vietnam News :
" Cold winds and fears of hand-foot-mouth disease spread have caused an increasing number of children to be hospitalised at the Ha Noi National Hospital of Paediatrics for respiratory diseases.
Head of the hospital's Consultation Department Can Phu Nhuan said that the department received around 3,000 children last Monday, 1.5 times higher than the normal figure.
Almost all patients showed symptoms including coughing, fevers, sneezing and even pneumonia, he said, adding that children aged between 1 and 3 were usually more vulnerable to respiratory diseases.
Nguyen Thi Lien, from northern Thai Binh Province, had to take her one-year-old child to the hospital twice this month because of fevers and a sore throat.
However, Nhuan said that parents should not be overly worried when their children coughed, as it was a natural reflex to help push harmful bacteria out of their lungs."

Vietnam : Hanoians warned about dengue fever outbreaks
Article from Vietnam News :
" HA NOI : Dengue fever outbreaks were increasingly likely in Ha Noi and people needed to take precautions to avoid catching the disease, said deputy director of Ha Noi's Preventive Medicine Centre Nguyen Nhat Cam.
"We are entering a weather pattern of high temperatures and humidity, which provides better conditions for mosquitoes, which spread dengue fever," said Cam.
Previously, the cycle of the dengue fever in Ha Noi came around every four to five years from May to November. However, during the past few years, it was hard to predict outbreaks of the disease, he said.
Cam said rapid urbanisation and better transportation enabled the disease to spread more rapidly.
During the first four months of the year, the number of cases diagnosed with dengue fever was 220, an increase of 15 to 20 per cent compared to the same period last year.
The highest concentration was in Hoang Mai, Hai Ba Trung and Gia Lam districts.
Cam said these areas had high population density, a substantial population of migrant workers from the countryside and poor hygiene conditions.
The doctor urged authorities to boost campaigns to raise public awareness about dengue fever. There was no vaccine and no specific treatment available for dengue fever yet. However, most preventive measures were simple and could be carried out at home."

Vietnam : Vaccine not magic bullet for bird flu
An article from Vietnam News :
" HA NOI : Vaccination was not a "magic bullet" against bird flu, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation Bangkok-based expert in viral diseases Subhash Morzaria said yesterday.
"It requires additional measures like surveillance, contingency plans and sound bio security," he told the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Capacity Building Workshop on Vaccination Against Avian Influenza in Ha Noi.
Although vaccination was an essential tool in countries with a high number of human infections and economic losses, bio security was recommened when the virus first appeared, he said.
"If it's not acceptable to kill a large number of animals, infected countries must use vaccination."
But surveillance should be used with all vaccination programmes to detect outbreaks early as well as the incursion of any mutations and changes in clinical signs.
Seventeen countries have reported avian influenza outbreaks in animals this year - 11 of them in Asia, including Viet Nam."

Vietnam : Border region battles malaria
Via Vietnam News :
" DAK LAK : The Central Highland Province of Dak Lak and Cambodia's Mundulkiri Province will take added measures to fight malaria spreading along border areas.
This was one of the outcomes at the second conference on controlling the disease held here on Monday by the province's Global Malaria Control Fund Project Management Board.
Board vice chairman and vice director of the province's Malaria Control Centre, Ho Tan Tien, said the shortage of healthcare staff in both provinces made it difficult to discover and treat malaria patients at an early stage.
Many who caught the disease travelled along the border zone or were farmers who slept in the forest at nights."
