" MIDSAYAP, North Cotabato, Aug. 9 : Four more died due to dengue fever, raising the casualty figure of the highly preventable killer disease to 11 in North Cotabato this year, health authorities said.
Seven more dengue cases were reported in the province in July, according to the Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (PESU).
Dr. Hansel Amoguis, PESU in charge, said most of the fatalities were children aged two to 12 years old.
“Dengue cases in North Cotabato are quite alarming," Dr. Amoguis said, adding that "if we are going to compare our data from the past year, we have higher one now."
Based on PESU records, the dengue deaths came from the towns of Banisilan (four), Libungan and Kidapawan City (two each), Arakan, Makilala, and Pigcawayan (one each).
In 2009, PESU recorded a total of 1,608 validated and suspected cases of dengue with only lone fatality in the same period (January-July).
However, this year the disease already affected 2,377 persons which was 46 percent higher compared to the same period last year, Dr. Amoguis said."
