Superbug ‘not yet reported in Ireland’

A report from Irish Medical Times, the whole report :

" To date, no incidents involving superbug NDM-1 isolates have been reported to the HSE’s Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), according to Dr Fidelma Fitzpatrick, consultant microbiologist.

“The HPSC in conjunction with microbiologists and laboratories, monitors antibiotic resistance in bacteria from the bloodstream as part of the European-EARS-Net programme. Measures to prevent the emergence of this bacteria include ongoing surveillance, good antibiotic stewardship to prevent overuse or inappropriate use of antibiotics and good hygiene including hand washing and environmental cleaning,” the HPSC added.

A new gene called New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase, or NDM-1, was found in patients in South Asia and in Britain by researchers earlier this month. NDM-1 makes bacteria highly resistant to almost all antibiotics, including the most powerful class called carbapenems, and experts say there are no new drugs on the horizon to tackle it."
