UK : Scientist claims that we’ve lost the war against superbugs

Via Wales Online :

" SUPERBUGS are claiming victory in the war with scientists, the man behind the discovery of a new deadly form of bacteria in the UK has warned.

Professor Timothy Walsh told Wales on Sunday that in the “Darwinian” battle against disease-carrying bacteria, we are on the losing side.

And he said that we will all have to face up to a world where antibiotics simply do not work anymore.
His claim came after he and his team of scientists at Cardiff University found 37 cases in the UK of a deadly new form of superbug that is resistant to ALL antibiotics.

His team discovered bugs with the NDM-1 gene in the UK for the first time. The gene can attach itself to the DNA of bacteria and transfer between different strains at lightning speed – giving them resistance to treatment with even the most powerful antibiotics.

If it spreads around the world it could have devastating effects – knocking the scientific battle against bacteria back to where we were in the 1920s, before penicillin was discovered.

It could mean that routine operations could be deadly and infections like tuberculosis and pneumonia could once more become widespread killers."
