" KUALA LUMPUR : Two people died of dengue shock syndrome last week, bringing the death toll from the vector-borne disease to 58 this year.
The latest deaths -- both in Selangor -- prompted the Health Ministry to be more aggressive in its bid to search and destroy potential Aedes mosquito breeding sites nationwide.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said investigations revealed that one of the victims came from an area where the Aedes breeding was high, that is between two and 3.6 per cent, while another was from a dengue hotspot.
Between May 9 and 15, he said, there were 766 new dengue cases reported in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Malacca, Terengganu, Pahang and Penang, bringing the cases to 17,981 for the period between Jan 1 and May 19.
Last year, during the same period, Dr Ismail said, there were 20,187 cases and 52 deaths."
