India : A(H1N1) vaccination for health workers begins

Via The Hindu :

" Thiruvananthapuram : The Health department began the first phase of A(H1N1) vaccination in all districts on Monday, covering health teams, including doctors, nurses and paramedical staff, who may be at the highest risk of contracting the A(H1N1) infection.

All main A(H1N1) treating hospitals in both private and public sector, including medical colleges, major community health centres, and district hospitals, are being covered in the first phase of the seven-day campaign.

On the first day, 2,624 health personnel were covered.

The department has renewed the alert against A(H1N1) infection.

“In the past one week alone, after a relatively quiet gap of two months, we have reported four positive cases and one death owing to H1N1.

Now that the surveillance has been stepped up, we can expect more cases to be reported.

Even otherwise, as seasonal cold and other acute respiratory infections go up during this season, a proportional increase in H1N1 cases should be expected,” a senior official said.

Special care should be taken in the case of children contracting seasonal flu or cold, especially as the start of the monsoon and the school reopening coincide."
