WHO said in a report reaching the Department of Health (DoH) Central Office in Manila that there is a notable increase of influenza-like illness (ILI) in Asia and in parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

In Asia, ILI rates are increasing in the temperate countries. Mongolia has noted a sharp increase in the proportion of outpatients with ILI in sentinel clinics, which crossed the epidemic threshold two to three weeks ago.

China has noted slight increases recently in the northern part of the country, where 18 percent of specimens tested have been positive for influenza virus.

In both countries, influenza A(H3N2) virus has been the predominant virus detected with China also reporting smaller numbers of influenza type B.

The Republic of Korea and Japan have also noted low level but increasing rates of ILI."

Rise in dengue cases an effect of climate change — DOH official

An article from Balita, excerpt :

" DAVAO CITY, Dec. 8 : The high incidence of dengue cases nationwide is an effect of climate change, according to Department of Health (DOH) Assistant Secretary Paulyn Jean B. Rosell-Ubial.

Ubial said the dengue problem this year has increased tremendously at 120,000 cases. The recorded cases from 1993 to 2009 was only as high as 6,000.

"Climate change is not the future anymore, it is with us now," Ubial said.

Dengue has four strains and what happened now was of multi-strain, Ubial stressed when she discussed the disease recently in a forum in Davao City entitled Biodiversity Conservation: Tropical Diseases and Public Health.

The DOH official also said there are other diseases that the public must be aware of namely the influenza virus, the H5N5 that was reported in HongKong and also the HIV-AIDS.

The HIV/AIDS cases doubled in the past years from 2006 to the present, Ubial said as she cited that unprotected sex between those infected with the disease covers 85 percent of cases, attributed to more men having sex with men in the last five years."

Malaysia : Isolated bacteria strain tested superbug positive

An article from Balita :

" KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 26 : An isolated bacteria strain, out of a total of 18 strains, was tested NDM-1 positive in Malaysia, the Malaysian Health Ministry said in a statement here on Tuesday.

According to the ministry, the Malaysian Institute of Medical Research (MIMR) has conducted screenings on 18 isolated bacteria strains with a high resistance pattern.

One strain was tested NDM-1 positive.

However, the ministry stressed that the strain, which was obtained from a cancer patient, was only a colonizer, meaning that it would not cause the patient any disease.

In other words, the ministry said the patient was only a carrier of the bacteria.

To prevent the bacteria from being spread widely, the ministry said hospitals in Malaysia were directed to send bacteria samples that are resistant to most of the antibiotics to the MIMR for further investigations.

The NDM-1 bacteria is most prevalent in South Asia, but has also been found in Britain, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, the United States and Sweden.

Due to its multi-drug resistant characteristic, it is also dubbed the superbug."

Philippines : Dengue downs 364 people in Albay in first half of 2010

Via Balita :

" LEGAZPI CITY, July 8 : Albay Governor Joey Salceda has directed the Provincial Health Office (PHO) and the various district hospitals to intensify their respective sanitation and clean-up campaign to curb the rising incidence of dengue.

This, as the PHO noted Thursday the surge in dengue cases in Albay with 364 people inflicted by the mosquito borne disease in the past two quarters of this year.

The PHO epidemiology surveillance team said reports from filed units indicate that the current 364 dengue cases are alarmingly way above the 35 cases reported during the same period last year.

Salceda said dengue cases increased 10 times during the first half of the year and this may be attributed to the effect of the El Nino phenomenon spawned by climate change.

He said “until now we are still feeling the effect of the dry spell, people are still getting sick, they cannot work, thus affecting their way of life.”

Philippines : DOH-CHD6 issues alert on dengue

Via Balita :

" ILOILO CITY, June 22 : With the onset of the rainy season, the Department of Health (DOH) regional office here has raised the alarm over the ongoing spread of dengue fever, mostly brought about by bites of daytime aedes egypti and aedes albopictus mosquitoes.

DOH regional director Ariel Valencia said the warning must be heeded by parents of children as dengue cases continue to rise in Iloilo and in the rest of Western Visayas. Valencia said that dengue has become a year-round public health threat and continues to hold its position as an infectious disease with far reaching effects regionwide and nationwide.

Valencia said that dengue prevention and control is a community action and involvement of the different agencies and the private sector. The DOH advises the public to strictly follow the practice of cleaning the surroundings and to properly dispose of their tin cans, empty bottles, used tires and other containers so that these do not become mosquito-breeding places.

On the other hand, the DOH-CHD WV strongly promotes the 4-S campaign: Searching and destroying possible breeding grounds of dengue-carrying mosquitoes; wearing long Sleeved shirts and pants for protection; Seeking health professionals for a fever that lasts two days or more; and Saying no to indiscriminate fogging.

There are 126 recorded dengue cases in Iloilo City while the province of Iloilo has 231 cases and 2 deaths. The total number of cases in Western Visayas reached 1,309 from January 1 to May 8, 2010 as per the Regional Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (RESU) Report."

Philippines : DOH advises public to remove dengue mosquito breeding grounds

Via Balita, a public reminder from the DOH in curbing the dengue spread in Philippines :

" MANILA, June 2 – The Department of Health (DOH) has advised the public to remove stagnant water in uncovered containers to prevent mosquitoes from breeding on them as dengue cases are again on the rise this season.

Dr. Lyndon Leesuy, DOH Dengue Control Program manager, said dengue cases will worsen this rainy season as records show that some 14,000 cases nationwide were recorded from January to April this year compared to the 9,000 cases recorded on the same period last year.

Leesuy said with the onset of rains starting this month, they are expecting that cases all over the country will increase further.

The DOH warned that rains may provide breeding grounds for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
With the warning, Leesuy urged the public to take notice of vacant lots because these could also spark dengue outbreak.

Dengue cases tend to rise during rainy days because of the build-up of clean and stagnant waters where mosquitoes breed."
