Puerto Rico : 2 more deaths bring dengue toll to 22 for year

" The confirmation of two more fatal dengue cases has pushed the death toll from the mosquito-borne virus to a record 22 for the year, the Health Department reported Friday.
The two newly confirmed deaths — an adult and a minor — were among a dozen fatalities being analyzed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), according to Assistant Health Secretary Concepción Quiñones de Longo.
The incidence of the virus shows little sign of slowing months into an epidemic that has sickened thousands of people around the island.
A total of 840 suspected dengue cases were reported to the CDC in the most recent week registered (Aug.20-26), which is 629 cases above the epidemic threshold for the period, Quiñones de Longo said.
The number of dangerous hemorrhagic dengue cases held at 28 for the year.
The municipalities with the highest incidence for the most recent week reported were: Bayamón, San Juan, Ponce, Arecibo, Quebradillas and Guaynabo."

Health official warns of malaria in D.R., Haiti

" State Epidemiologist Carmen de Seda is urging Puerto Ricans to keep trips in the tropics short due to confirmed cases of malaria.
The island Health Department official said travelers to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Central America, South America and Africa should limit trips to four days and use insect repellant.
Her warning Wednesday comes as Puerto Rico grapples with what is shaping up as its worst dengue epidemic ever, with 18 confirmed deaths from the mosquito-borne virus and more than a dozen others under evaluation.
De Seda told Inter News Service in an interview that between three and five cases of malaria are reported in Puerto Rico every year, all involving patients who contracted that mosquito-borne disease while traveling outside the island.
“There are no local cases, we don’t have malaria,” De Seda said.
The Dominican Medical Association reported last week that 1,600 cases of malaria have been reported in that country this year, already topping the annual average of 1,400 cases."

The 730 suspected dengue cases logged that week (July 23-29) marked the only slowing in the incidence of dengue since the epidemic was declared months ago.

There were 730 suspected dengue cases logged in the most recent week reported (July 23-29), according to the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC). That was sharply lower than the 835 cases registered during the prior week, but still nearly 600 cases above the epidemic threshold for the period.
The number of dengue deaths remained at seven for the year. The number of hemorrhagic dengue cases, the most serious strain, also held unchanged at 25, according to Health Department statistics.
However, three additional deaths remain under evaluation by the CDC in Atlanta, González said.
