India : Spike in swine flu cases worries Delhi doctors
Via The Hindu :
" Amid a rise in seasonal diseases in the city, doctors here claim that the most worrying trend is the increase in H1N1 (swine flu) cases. The virus seems to have returned to haunt the Capital after a lull of a few years.
According to Central government figures, Delhi has recorded 1,507 cases (as on July 26, 2013) and 16 deaths. The disease had last created a panic-like situation in Delhi in 2009-10.
Talking about the preparations, Delhi Health Minister A. K. Walia said: “We are concerned about the situation and are putting in place some measures to ensure that the rise is controlled. All city hospitals have been asked to follow the H1N1 protocol, including ensuring isolation wards with dedicated staff for patients coming in with the flu. The State government is also looking at ensuring enough supply and availability of Tamiflu at all centres”.
Doctors in the city have confirmed that they have been seeing cases of swine flu since early this year.
Swine flu was at its most virulent form in the country when it spread in 2009. Till May 2010, 1,035 people had died of the disease in India and more than 10,000 were infected."

India, New Delhi : Maximum swine flu cases from capital
Via Times of India :
" Swine flu, which took to epidemic proportions in the year 2009, continues to be a threat. As per health ministry data on state-wise prevalence of the disease, a total of 610 people have died due to the viral infection this year in the country.
Of this, maximum number of deaths, 196, have been reported from Gujarat, followed by Rajasthan (163), Maharashtra (90), Punjab (42), Haryana (41) and Madhya Pradesh (31). Delhi has reported 1,507 cases of swine flu and 16 deaths since January 1.
While the reason behind the spurt is being investigated, experts say a mutation in the virus may have played a role. "Any new virus takes five to six years to settle down in a population. Reporting of cases in between is not unusual. However, people are advised to take precautions such as maintaining good hygiene, trying to avoid contact with infected persons and see a doctor if somebody has difficulty in breathing or cough up blood," said a senior doctor.
The nodal officer for swine flu in Delhi, Dr Charan Singh, said that most swine flu cases were reported in January and February. "Only one to two cases have been reported in last one month. There is no reason to panic. Our hospitals and designated laboratories are fully equipped to diagnose and treat such patients," he said. The health department, he added, has directed all hospitals to stay alert and follow the H1N1 protocol as laid down by the ministry in the wake to the 2009 epidemic."

India, New Delhi : Spurt in cases of dengue, malaria after wet spell
" Enjoy the monsoon but exercise caution. The intermittent rain and high humidity levels in the city have led to increase in mosquito breeding. Officials say that cases of vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria have gone up.
According to the municipal corporations, this year five people have been confirmed positive for dengue fever. Thirty- two cases of malaria have also been reported. "Two new dengue cases were confirmed in last one month," said Dr N K Yadav, the municipal health officer. He said that the cases of all mosquito-borne diseases is expected to increase in the coming days and in order to tackle the situation, they have intensified campaigns to create awareness on the dos and don'ts. In 2012, Delhi reported about 3,000 dengue cases and four patients died due to the mosquito-borne disease.
"Our domestic breeding checkers are visiting all homes to check mosquito-breeding and challans have also been issued in some cases. We have enough stock of larvacides required to check any spread," the municipal health officer said. A recent report by the Directorate of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBCP) on breeding of aedes mosquitoes showed high container index (CI) of 12.9 and house index (HI) of 6.7 in the Delhi Cantonment area among others."

" With the city reporting eight new cases of chikungunya, and 41 cases in all this season, the mosquito borne infection seems to be on a constant rise. Last year, there were only five chikungunya cases during the corresponding period. Chikungunya fever is a viral disease transmitted to humans by the bite of infected aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
While the infection was initially restricted to Palam village, it is now being detected in other parts of the city as well, which is not a very healthy sign," said Dr VK Monga, chairman, public health committee, Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
"So far, the highest number of cases of chikungunya has been reported from Najafgarh, which is a worrisome trend. We are awaiting the results of two more suspected chikungunya cases," he said.
Symptoms of chikungunya include fever, debilitating arthralgia (joint pain), swelling of joints, stiffness, myalgia (muscular pain), headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and rashes.
According to health experts, the incubation period (time from infection to illness) for chikungunya can be 2-12 days, but is usually 3-7 days."

India : Chikungunya count low as most cases go undetected
" NEW DELHI: After dengue, chikungunya is creating a scare among Delhiites and health agencies. MCD has reported 33 cases so far but its officials admit that cases are under-reported due to lack of availability of specialised kits to confirm the disease.
Both private and government hospitals are getting a large number of patients with acute to chronic joint pain. Patients are reporting to hospitals after high-grade fever. "It (chikungunya) is a poor cousin of dengue. It mimics dengue symptoms like fever, rashes, drop in platelets, etc, but the distinguishing symptom is acute joint pain," said Dr Sanjeev Bagai, CEO, Batra Hospital."
