Article via TVNZ :
" Meningococcal disease appears to have spread to Taranaki, with two suspected cases of the rapidly-moving infection reported over the weekend.
Wellington and Northland have been hit hard with cases of B and C strains of meningococcal disease over the past three months, killing five people and hospitalising more than a dozen others.
Greg Simmons of the Taranaki District Health Board said a child under 10 and a young adult had been admitted to hospital on Saturday with suspected cases of the infection.
The two reports appeared to be unrelated and both patients were recovering, but the situation was still rare, Simmons told the Taranaki Daily News."

New Zealand : Kiwis top the list looking for online flu help
Article via TVNZ :
" New Zealand could have the highest occurrence of flu of anywhere in the world, if statistics from search engine Google are to be believed.
The number of people using Google for flu-related searches is higher in New Zealand than in other countries, and statisticians say there is a close relationship between people looking online for flu health advice and actual cases of flu.
"Of course, not every person who searches for 'flu' is actually sick, but a pattern emerges when all the flu-related search queries are added together," it says on google.org .
"We compared our query counts with traditional flu surveillance systems and found that many search queries tend to be popular exactly when flu season is happening."

E.coli cases dropping signficantly in Germany
Via TVNZ :
" The rate of new cases of Germans contracting a deadly strain of E.coli bacteria are declining significantly, German Health Minister Daniel Bahr has told German television.
"There will be new cases and unfortunately we have to expect more deaths, but the number of new infections are dropping significantly," Bahr said in an interview with ARD television channel today.
"I cannot sound the all clear, but after analysing the latest data we have reasonable cause for hope."
Bahr sounded more upbeat than on Tuesday, when he said he was "cautiously optimistic" that the worst was over.
The United States has made headway fighting a deadly E.coli, but the lethal outbreak in Germany and a lack of progress against Salmonella show how much remains to be done to keep food safe, health officials said on Tuesday.
European scientists are scrambling to find the source of the E.coli outbreak in Germany that has infected more than 2,400 people and killed 23 of them.
The German outbreak is caused by the rare strain of Shiga toxin-producing E.coli known as STEC O104:H4. It appears to be the deadliest outbreak of E.coli ever seen, with a third of patients developing the severe complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which frequently leads to kidney failure and can result in death."

New Zealand : Surfing champion dies from dengue fever
An article from TVNZ :
" The surfing world is mourning with shock news of three-time world champion Andy Irons' death at age 32. Irons was forced to withdraw from round one of the current Rip Curl Pro Search world championship tour event in Puerto Rico with illness over the weekend, and then flew out of the island.
The American died during a stop over, believed to be in Dallas, Texas, on Tuesday on his way back home to Kauai, Hawaii where he was to seek treatment. It's believed Irons was battling a severe case of dengue fever, a debilitating viral disease. Surfers and event organisers at the Rip Curl Search in Puerto Rico were devastated after receiving the news.
Irons was a popular surfer on tour, who won the world title three times in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and for many years was the main rival to nine-times world champion Kelly Slater. He had 20 world tour event wins and is the only surfer to have won at every location on the ASP tour. He is survived by his wife Lyndie Dupuis. "

New Zealand : South Island warned to brace itself for swine flu
Via TVNZ :
" South Islanders are being warned about complacency over swine flu, as a wave of cases is expected to head their way.
The virus has already caused six deaths around the country, and is implicated in four others, all in the North Island.
But health officials are now telling those in the south to brace themselves for the illness.
Dr Mark Jacobs from the Ministry of Health says this means people who aren't immunised should consider doing so quickly, before the H1N1 virus hits its peak in the south.
"People are nearly running our of time to actually get vaccinated to give themselves protection," he told ONE News. "

New Zealand : Thousands of Kiwis immunised against flu
Via TVNZ:
" Over 800,000 people have already been immunised against flu this year - more than in the entire 2008 flu season and around 100,000 more than at the same time last year.
The Ministry of Health said this would make a real contribution to lessening the risk of a big second wave of swine flu this year, as the 12 month anniversary of the first cases arriving in New Zealand rolls around.
The level of immunisation comes despite a backlog created by a week-long standstill at Europe's airports due to the Iceland volcanic eruption which interrupted the supply of vaccine.
Deputy director of public health Dr Darren Hunt said the next shipment should arrive from France to replenish the national stockpile early next week.
But there was still likely to be some shortfall in vaccine supply for a few days and possibly some delays in GPs being able to book people in for immunisation."
