" Dengue and other viral diseases are fast becoming a serious health hazard in the country. The number of Indians inflicted with dengue fever alone rose sharply by more than 50 per cent in 2010 over the previous year across the nation.
What’s worse, the vector-borne disease is becoming more fatal every year.According to the Government data tabled in the Lok Sabha recently, the country reported 28,076 dengue cases in 2010, up from 15,535 in the previous year. The figures showed as many as 110 Indians succumbed to the disease against 96 during the period.
The cases may be higher given ]that many States like Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Uttarakhand have not reported the incidents to the Central Health Ministry."

India : Swine flu claims 2 more lives, toll 35

" Two more persons succumbed to the deadly swine flu and another died of dengue in the national Capital on Monday taking the total toll of those affected by swine flu to 35 and dengue to four. Meanwhile, 20 patients tested positive for the H1N1 influenza too. With these fresh cases, the total number of infected people has reached 1,165. Dr Debashish Bhattacharya, Nodal Officer for swine flu, Delhi Government said, "Both were residents of Delhi. One was admitted in the Sir Gangaram Hospital and the other was a child who was undergoing treatment in the Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalya Hospital." Banerjee added, "With this, the toll in the city alone is 22 as of now whereas 13 others who succumbed to this virus were from the other States.
"Taking precautionary measures, the Delhi Government has reserved an eight-bed cell in Lok Nayak Jai Prakash hospital for athletes participating in the Commonwealth Games and suffering from swine flu. "A complete isolated facility has been created on the fifth floor of the hospital that will cater to any athlete testing positive for the H1N1 virus during the Commonwealth Games," Medical Superintendent LNJP hospital, Amit Banerjee said.
Swine flu cases have been on a rise since early August 2010 and have crossed the 1,300 mark in the national capital. Health Minister Kiran Walia said, "This hospital has been selected as it is close to many Commonwealth Games venues. Suppose there is a case reported from Indira Gandhi Sports Complex or Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, this hospital will be easily accessible in least time. The eight-bed facility will have a separate security arrangement, a direct vehicular access and a separate lift," said Banerjee."

India : 65 test positive for dengue on Friday; count reaches 674

" Delhiites saw season's highest confirmed cases of dengue on Friday with 65 more patients testing positive for the mosquito-borne disease. With this the number of people affected by this disease has reached a massive figure of 674. Among the total 674 cases reported so far, 558 have been recorded from MCD areas, 84 from NDMC areas. The rest cases include patients from other parts of the city as well as patients from other States. Among the fresh cases , the highest 14 were reported from MCD Civil Lines zone, followed by 11 cases from the South Zone.
According to statistics released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the numbers of cases till this time in 2009 were only four. The figure was 67 and 17 in the same periods in 2008 and 2007 respectively.
According to the MCD, in the previous years, the number of dengue cases and deaths were 1,153 and 3 (2009), 1,312 and 2(2008), 548 and 1 2007) and 3,366 and 36 (2006)."

India : One more swine flu death in Cuttack, State toll reaches 4

" One more person died of swine flu in Cuttack on Thursday taking the death toll in the dreaded disease to four in 2010 in Odisha. With incessant rains now sweeping across the State and people in large numbers suffering from fever accompanied with cold and cough, swine flu threat has gripped almost every household.Biswanath Ekka (30), a Rourkela-based software engineer died of the disease at SCB Medical College Hospital here on Thursday, registering the first death in the premier referral hospital of the State which had successfully cured over 30 known swine flu patients in 2009.
"Every swine flu patient was also cured and discharged from our hospital this year. But we could not save the software engineer who was shifted here from a Bhubaneswar hospital in critical condition on Wednesday night," said the hospital administrative officer BN Moharana on Thursday. Ekka, who was reportedly infected with H1N1 virus during his recent trip to Hyderabad, was first admitted in Usthi Diagnostics, a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, on August 2. After his swab samples tested positive to the virus on Wednesday, he was shifted to the Cuttack hospital."
