Canada : MRSA numbers exploding in Northern Manitoba

Via First Perspective:

" WINNIPEG : Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) is calling for a collaborative investigation into the startling number of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) cases being reported in the Burntwood Regional Health Authority – the vast majority in MKO First Nations. A 2007 study into this issue noted that, “increasing incidence of MRSA infections among Canadian First Nations and northern communities have received attention from public health authorities, although comprehensive measures to determine the infection dynamics and prevent spread have yet to be implemented in affected areas.

In December 2009 the Province of Manitoba reported 256 cases of MRSA, 139 of which came from First Nations in the BRHA region, which represents 30% of all reported communicable diseases for the entire province. In January, 91 cases were reported in First Nations within the BRHA region - out of a total of 227 for the whole province; February had 129 out of 243. For March 2010, 113 cases were reported in First Nations within the BRHA region - out of a total of 235 for the whole province. On average, this represents over 49% of MRSA cases in a region with less than 5% of the provincial population"
