Malaysia: Dengue - 789 Cases and One Death Reported Last Week

" KUALA LUMPUR, June 3: A total of 789 dengue cases and one death were reported between May 23 and 29, Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said Thursday.He said this was a decrease of 45 cases or five per cent compared with 834 cases recorded the previous week.

The only death due to dengue reported last week was in Melaka, involving a patient who died of dengue haemorrhagic fever with underlying complex cyanotic heart disease, he said in a statement here Thursday.

Johor recorded the highest increase with 29 cases, followed by Pahang (20), Kedah (14), Kelantan (13), Kuala Lumpur/Putrajaya (10) and Perak (one).

Dr Mohd Ismail said that throughout last week, 24 high-risk areas were still active compared with 34 the previous week, involving Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Sabah.

Meanwhile, he said, three cases of the Chikungunya viral disease were reported last week -- two in Sarawak and one in Sabah -- a drop of three compared with the previous weekly."
