Philippines : Dengue on the rise in Negros Occidental

" BACOLOD CITY : The number of dengue cases in Negros Occidental more than double during the first five months of the year compared to same period in 2009, the provincial health office reported on Friday.

From 187 dengue fever cases recorded from January 1 to May 29 last year, the cases rose to 463 this year, or by 148 percent, provincial health officer Luisa Efren said in a report.

The report also said one patient from Himamaylan City died from dengue shock at the Lorenzo D. Zayco District Hospital in Kabankalan City this year. There were three deaths in Negros Occidental during the same period last year.

The report said that the top five dengue-hit areas in Negros Occidental this year were the cities of Silay (76 cases), Cadiz (59), Sagay (50), Escalante (28) and Bago (28).

Other affected areas were Manapla (28), La Carlota City (23), Victorias City (23), Talisay City (20), E.B. Magalona (16), Calatrava (14), San Carlos City (14), Toboso (12), Kabankalan City (8), Himamaylan City (7);

Isabela (6), Hinoba-an (5), Ilog (5), Moises Padilla (5), Murcia (5), Candoni (4), Cauayan (4), Hinigaran (4), Sipalay City (4), Don Salvador Benedicto (3), La Castellana (3), San Enrique (3), Pontevedra (2), Pulupandan (2), Valladolid (1), and Binalbagan (1)."
