" CITY OF SAN FERNANDO : The Department of Health (DOH) here reported yesterday 12 deaths due to mosquito-borne dengue fever in Central Luzon, amid expectations that dengue cases have yet to peak this month and in September.
Nurse Rosonna Rosell of the regional epidemiology department of the DOH told Punto that dengue cases in Central Luzon jacked up from 142 cases in June to 293 new cases last July, or an increase of about seven percent. Since last January, a total of 1,182 denque cases have been reported in the region, she noted.
“But this increase in the number of cases could be due to the fact that unlike before, we now are also getting reports on dengue cases from both public and private hospitals, as well as rural health units,” Rosell said. She said that of the fatalities, five were from Bulacan, four from Pampanga, two in Aurora, and one in Nueva Ecija.
This, she noted, meant a mortality rate of 1.02 percent.Rosell said that 40 percent of the dengue cases so far this year, or 449 cases were reported in Bulacan. The DOH report also cited 278 cases in Nueva Ecija, 183 in Pampanga, 85 in Zambales, 75 in Tarlac, 22 in Bataan, and 19 in Aurora."
