Fiji : Flu strain has gone ‘seasonal'

Via The Fiji Times Online :

" H1N1 is now a seasonal illness, says the Ministry of Health.

Public Health deputy secretary Dr Josefa Koroivueta said it was now considered a seasonal influenza and could be controlled through preventative measures.

"We urge people to go back to the basics of using soap when washing hands and also to carry a handkerchief at all times to cover your mouth and nose when you cough," he said.

"In previous years, these were habits that people practiced but these days, it is rare to even see a person carrying a handkerchief."

He said Fiji had an effective quarantine system which was evident in the absence of malaria cases in the country; quarantine, he said, was not an issue.

National adviser for communicable diseases Dr Prem Singh said there had been no significant increases of H1N1 in 2009 to reflect the international outbreak."
