Via The Telegraph :
" Manipur will be the first state in the Northeast to have bird flu testing facilities as the state veterinary and animal husbandry department is all set to open a high-security laboratory.
The Centre sanctioned the setting up of such laboratories in four northeastern states — Manipur, Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya — in view of the vulnerability of the region to diseases like bird flu and swine flu.
“Of the four states in the Northeast, Manipur has better work progress. We are ready with the laboratory. Finishing touches are being given and we will be opening it very soon,” an official of the veterinary and husbandry department told The Telegraph.
The laboratory will be known as the Animal Biosafety level II laboratory. Animal/bird materials, tissues, blood samples and carcasses can be tested here without the fear of spreading any disease to the outside world."
