" QUEENSLAND Health has urged residents to get their flu vaccination to curb the high levels of influenza already recorded this year.
Queensland’s Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeannette Young said there had been 1598 notifications of influenza in Queensland so far this year - more than 1300 more than the same period last year.
Dr Young said the higher than usual level of influenza cases made vaccination vital for the coming months.
``It’s especially important for people in groups considered most at risk, and that’s why Queensland Health provides free ‘flu vaccinations for the elderly, pregnant women, indigenous people aged over 15 and those at risk due to medical conditions,’’ Dr Young said.
``Influenza is a highly contagious and potentially serious disease that can be spread through coughing and sneezing."
