" MUMBAI : With rains round the corner, the civic body is working overtime to take the sting out of malaria this year. Also, the BMC will try its best to curb late diagnosis. Reason: A ‘death analysis’ has revealed that a good 60% of malaria deaths last year in Mumbai were due to late diagnosis.
In 2009, Mumbai accounted for 70% of the state’s malaria deaths. Not to forget that 198 lives, highest in the last five years, were lost to the deadly sting despite the best of preventive measures.
Executive health officer of BMC Dr Girish Ambe confirmed the findings of the malaria death committee report. “Nearly 60% of the malaria deaths took place due to late diagnosis mainly by non-allopathic doctors,” he said. Terming it a disturbing finding, Ambe said it was directly a fallout of the fact that Mumbai has lost the concept of family doctors."
