" Bauchi State Agency for the Control of Tuberculosis, Malaria, HIVAIDS and Leprosy (BACATMA] has said about 474 people were reported dead of malaria related sicknesses in the state in 2009.
Similarly, the state government in its determined efforts to wipe out malaria among the people particularly women and children, has through the Agency over the last two years, distributed malaria tablets to all the health facilities in the state.
Speaking at the opening of a 2-day training workshop for journalists on how to report malaria in the state, Chairman of BACATMA, Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, said his Agency, in 2009, purchased and distributed long-lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets worth about N2.5b to the people of the state as well as other malaria tablets. Mohammed also said that his Agency was committed to the eradication of malaria in the state. He said that was the reason why it has embarked on sensitisation and mobilisation of the communities on ways to prevent the spread of the sickness.
He added that Bauchi State has been classified as holo-endemic area for malaria while all the 20 local government areas in the state have reported cases of malaria which have resulted in deaths, particularly among pregnant women and children under the age of five years under threat at this period. The BACATMA Chairman further disclosed that his Agency has so far established Malaria clubs in 25 secondary schools across the state with the aim of making the students know about malaria at such stage of their lives adding that as at now ACT, IPT through SP treatments have been given to all those infected by malaria."
