" KUDAT: More people have been detected to be infected by tuberculosis (TB) in the district with 20 cases reported during the first three months of this year, said Tanjong Kapor assemblyman Datuk Teo Chee Kang.
He said the 20 cases were an increase from the total number of 96 TB cases reported in the district for the whole year in 2010.
Speaking at the launch of the district-level World TB Day here with the theme “On The Move: Transforming the fight towards elimination? Teo said although the government had started the national TB control programme more than 40 years, the disease still remains a scourge to the community, particularly in Kudat.
He said in 2008, 57,728 TB cases were reported nationwide, making it the second highest contagious disease after dengue fever.
Teo said 1,484 people died from TB in 2008 making it one of the main contributors to the mortality rate in the country.
“In 2010, Sabah recorded the highest number of people with 3,772 TB followed by Kelantan and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.
“In Sabah, Kudat has recorded the highest number with 96 cases. This makes Kudat the 13th district in the country with the highest number of TB cases,” he added."
