US : Mother succumbs to H1N1 on eve of fundraiser

Via Dayton Daily News, a heartwrenching story. God bless her soul, rest in peace:

" A fundraiser meant to help pay for a young mother’s mounting medical bills will now be used to pay for her funeral as 26-year-old Christy Bailey passed away late Friday night, April 30, after battling H1N1 for months.

Teachers and administrators at Ridgeway Elementary, where Bailey’s 7-year-old daughter Kendall attends school, organized “Washing Kars for Kendall,” held today, May 1 to raise money for Bailey. They had thought the funds would be used to help pay down her hospital bills because Bailey did not have insurance.

But they learned she had succumbed to the illness at 11:30 p.m. Friday, said Sylvia Hammons, a classroom mom who helped organize today’s fundraiser.

“You know in the morning when we first came together it was the first time we all saw each other since we got the news and it was so sad,” she said. “But to see all the people who came together to get their car washed and raise money for the family, it was so amazing.”

Bailey had been undergoing treatment at University Hospital in Cincinnati since Oct. 20 when her father, Gary Jackson, and stepmother, Verna, found her unresponsive and her fingers turning purple. Family members said she had felt ill since Oct. 17 but put off going to the hospital because she was unemployed and had no insurance."
