Vietnam : Blue ear disease spreads in Red River Delta of Vietnam

" The blue ear pig disease is spreading fast in Vietnam's Red River Delta, hitting 12 provinces and cities by Thursday, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, also known as blue ear pig disease, struck Vietnam's Red River Delta province of Quang Ninh on Thursday, causing 14 pigs out of 98 dead, said a report of the Department of Animal Health under the agricultural and rural development ministry.

Since the first case was detected in the northern province of Hai Duong on March 28, the virus has been spreading to 12 localities of Vietnam including 11 Red River Delta provinces of Hai Duong, Thai Binh, Thai Nguyen, Hung Yen, Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, Hanoi, Nam Dinh, Ha Nam, Lang Son, and Quang Ninh, and one central province of Nghe An.

There are more than seven millions of pigs raised in the Red River Delta region, accounting for 25 percent of the country's pig herd.

The department said that about 50,000 of pigs had contracted the virus so far and over 21,000 of them had been found dead or killed."
