Malaysia : Two dengue deaths last week

" KUALA LUMPUR: Two more deaths due to dengue, each in Melaka and Sarawak, were reported during the period between Aug 22 and 28, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said.

He said the case in Sarawak involved a 63 year-old housewife from Sri Aman, while the one in Melaka was 42-year-old policeman.

This brought to 103 deaths due to dengue reported since January until Aug 28 this year, an increase of 51 per cent or 35 deaths from 68 reported during the corresponding period last year, he said in a statement today. He said that during the week beginning Aug 22, a total of 1,159 cases of dengue fever were reported, an increase of 85 cases or eight per cent from 1,074 cases the previous week.

Ten states recorded an increase in the number of dengue cases, with Kelantan recording an increase of 57 cases, followed by Johor (34 cases), Sabah (15 cases), Penang and the Federal Territory of Putrajaya (11 cases each), Sarawak (eight cases), Perlis (five cases), Terengganu (four cases) and Kedah and Negeri Sembilan (one case each)."
