Taiwan : Watch out for new superbug - Premier

An article from Focus Taiwan :

" Taipei, Sept. 9 : Premier Wu Den-yih instructed the Department of Health (DOH) Thursday to keep a close eye on a new, drug-resistant superbug named NDM-1 from India that has not yet affected Taiwan but has spread to the United Kingdom, Japan and Hong Kong.

Wu said the Japanese authorities confirmed Sept. 6 that a man who visited India last year had contracted NDM-1, while Hong Kong has also reported a suspected case.

Although the Japanese and Hong Kong patients had received medical treatment in India or Pakistan and seemed to have contracted the disease from within hospitals, the bug can spread from health institutions to communities, the premier said.

He warned Taiwanese health institutions not to take the new superbug lightly and asked the DOH to step up its monitoring of the situation.

The DOH's Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday that NDM-1 will be listed as a communicable disease in Taiwan and that hospitals should immediately report any suspected cases, especially those in which the patient has received medical treatment in India or Pakistan."
