" As many as 54 people died of influenza A (H1N1) in India during the week ended October 3, an official statement from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare said here today, quoting information received from the States.
With this, the toll in the country since the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the swine flu as a pandemic in mid-June last year has gone up to 2574.
The WHO had on August 10, declared an end to the pandemic but called for continued vigilance, pointing out that pandemics, like the viruses that cause them, are unpredictable.
Of the 54 deaths, 17 occurred in Maharashtra, 11 in Gujarat, 6 in Madhya Pradesh, 4 in Orissa, 3 each in Karnataka and Delhi, 2 each in Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and 1 each in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Puducherry."
