131 People Die of Flu-Related Causes Last Season in Bulgaria

" A total of 131 people died of flu-related illnesses in Bulgaria during the flu season from December 2010 through February 2011, the Director of the Institute of Microbiology, Angel Gulubov, said on Monday, citing information from the country's 28 regional health inspectorates.

Speaking in the BTA National Press Club, Prof. Gulubov said the first of two flu waves was dominated by the strain A (H1N1), popularly known as swine flu, while type B was more active during the second wave.

Out of the total number of flu-related deaths, 101 were caused by pneumonia, 10 directly by flu, 1 by acute respiratory failure, and 10 by other complications.

The largest group of deaths, 45, occurred at ages between 46 and 64, and another 42 deaths occurred at 65 or over. There were also 13 children aged 4 or under."
