Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) says it hopes to re-activate the cooling system at Reactor 2 by Friday after laying a new power line to restore power to the system, adding that it is trying to do the same for the other two reactors.

Japan says it will accept technical help from the US to fight the nuclear crisis at Fukushima plant.

Japanese workers and troops continued the battle to prevent a nuclear meltdown as alarms over the disaster grew with more foreign governments advising their citizens to flee.

Australia on Friday upgraded its warnings about travel to Japan, telling its nationals to stay away from Tokyo, surrounding areas and northern Honshu island.

White smoke or steam was seen rising from Reactors 2, 3 and 4 at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, Japan's nuclear watchdog said on Friday, adding that it believed there was still water in the spent fuel pool at Reactor 3."
