" The Bhutanese veterinary authorities have reported outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Thimphu and Chhukha District.
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up reports 1 and 2 on 17 and 18 January, respectively. According to follow-up report no. 1, the affected population consists of poultry backyard farm within Thimphu City on 13 January.
In Thimphu, a total of 270 birds were found susceptible to the outbreak, out of which 38 cases were identified. The affected birds were found dead, and the remaining 232 were destroyed.
According to follow-up report no. 2, the outbreak in Chhukha district occurred on 30 December 2011, affecting backyard poultry in Mebesa village located above the district road off the national highway.
The report states that a total of 2010 birds showed signs of susceptibility, out of which 103 cases and deaths were reported. 1581 birds were destroyed.
According to the latter report, the outbreak at Mebesa village seems to have preceded the outbreak at Tsimasham village based on the trace-back mechanisms and time-line of the occurrence of events. The outbreaks at Mebesa and Tsimasham appear to be epidemiologically linked but need to be confirmed from the results of the virus sequencing and phylogenetic studies.
The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive."
