India : Water contamination alarming in 8,901 villages in state

" PUNE: A state health department survey of 28,262 villages ahead of the monsoons has revealed that as many as 8,901 villages have an alarming level of water contamination which may lead to an outbreak of diseases as the rains progress. The water in another 812 villages is marginally polluted but can be consumed after treatment.

Of the 8,901 villages that have high water contamination, 2,412 are in the Latur circle, 2,166 in the Akola circle, 1,831 in the Aurangabad circle, 758 in the Thane circle, 509 in the Nagpur circle, 503 in the Pune circle, 481 in the Nashik circle and 241 in the Kolhapur circle, the report states.

"The survey is an annual exercise of the state health department. It gives us feedback on pockets where disease outbreaks are possible due to water contamination," D S Dakhure, director of the state health services, told TOI. "
