" PENAMPANG, June 5 : Although the number of dengue cases dropped during the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year, the number of fatalities increased.
Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said the total number of dengue cases as at 8am today showed a 10 per cent drop, with 20,215 cases compared to 22,278 during the same period in 2009.
However, she said 62 deaths were reported so far this year compared to 56 over the same period last year.
"The increase is not caused by the environment or poor public awareness, but studies by the ministry found the patients' immune system to be weak as they had experienced dengue fever before.
"Some had experienced it two or three times previously and hence were more susceptible to infection," she told reporters after simultaneously officiating at the Kaamatan Festival, Youth Day, Teachers Day and Nurses Day celebrations organised by Sabah Puteri Umno in Kampung Limbanak, here, Saturday."
