Malaysia : Health Ministry To Focus Research On Relevant Diseases In Asia

Via Bernama :

" KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 : The Health Ministry will focus more on medical research on diseases which are relevant in the Asian region like dengue, tuberculosis, malaria and Influenza A (H1N1) this year, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said Wednesday.

He said the ministry would cooperate with researchers in local universities and medical organisations abroad to find new medicines to cure the diseases.

"Two organisations, TDR (Tropical Research Network) and Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDI), have expressed their intention to cooperate with the ministry in the research.

"Like in the case of malaria, we want to see if there is any new medicine because the malaria now is not the same as before, so the medicine which is being used now is not effective," he told reporters after opening the 13th National Institute of Health Scientific Meeting and 4th National Conference for Clinical Research here Wednesday.

Dr Mohd Ismail said a bigger allocation was needed from the government for more medical research to be carried out by the National Institute of Health (NIH)."
