" THE Ministry of Health has proposed appointment of an independent panel to investigate the death of 19-year-old Shiraz Khan, who relatives claimed was diagnosed with dengue fever but was not treated as an emergency case at two health institutions. He died two days after allegedly testing positive for the virus.
Khan died Thursday morning, less than a week of showing signs of the symptoms and visiting the health institutions, a relative said. Following Khan’s death and complaints by relatives, Attorney General Anand Ramlogan, yesterday advised Minister of Health Therese Baptiste- Cornelis to appoint an independent medical panel to examine the facts and circumstances surrounding this death.
In a press statement yesterday, Baptiste-Cornelis indicated she has accepted the AG’s recommendation and proposed to appoint a panel comprising a health care expert from the Ministry of Health, another from the Regional Health Authority (RHA) and one from the private sector. It was suggested that the report should be completed within 21 days and submitted to Baptiste-Cornelis and Ramlogan. If the panel has unearthed any wrongdoing, the Minister of Health has assured that disciplinary action will be taken."
