60 die of dengue hemorrhagic fever in Honduras

From Xinhua :

" MANAGUA, Aug. 31 : Dengue fever has killed 60 in Honduras since the deadly disease quickly spread across the nation earlier this year, the country's Health Ministry said Tuesday.

Among the total 54,000 confirmed cases, 1,796 were dengue hemorrhagic fever which has claimed 60 lives, a dengue specialist in the ministry said, according to news reports reaching here from Tegucigalpa.

He said nearly 50 percent of the total cases appeared in the capital city of Tegucigalpa, while the number of sufferers in San Pedro Sula, northwest of Honduras, grew rapidly.

The numbers of both dead and infected patients witnessed a sharp increase from 2009, the official said.

The rainy season and the breeding of mosquitoes dampened the efforts to prevent and control the disease, although the government has issued warnings and dispatched workers to spray mosquito pesticide in streets and canals."
