Woman may have been infected with NDM-1 in Japan

An article via Asahi :

" Bacteria containing the NDM-1 gene, which is resistant to almost all antibiotics, may be spreading in Japan, the health ministry cautioned Monday.

A woman in her 90s being treated in a hospital in Saitama has been found carrying a bacterium associated with pneumonia and containing the antibiotic-resistant gene.

The patient has not traveled abroad during the past few years, and the health ministry says she likely was infected in Japan.

It is the second case of a bacterium with the NDM-1 gene being detected in Japan.

In early September, a colon bacillus with the gene was found in a male patient at Dokkyo Medical University Hospital in Mibu, Tochigi Prefecture. He was hospitalized last year after returning from a trip to India."
